Flood Evacuation Direction Signs

Designed, market tested and implemented ‘new ‘direction signs to guide flood evacuees along preferred routes and out of high-risk flood zones towards safer areas to support NSW Government’s emergency framework

The Flood Evacuation Direction signs installed within the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley region in north-west Sydney provide a clear and simple guidance system to direct evacuees along identified routes
The design of the series of Flood Evacuation Direction signs incorporated a ‘new’ symbol. The new sign series were tested with a public audience and included driving simulator survey, technical field survey and part of a phone survey. Outcomes indicated successful comprehension of the symbol, effectiveness in providing directions, visual effectiveness under different lighting conditions and support for reliance on traffic signs for navigation. The project had significant inputs from NSW State Emergency Services, Infrastructure NSW, and Transport for NSW.
Achievements
  • NSW approved new sign design and sign series.

  • Non-critical Flood Evacuation Direction signs under normal traffic conditions outside of flood evacuations are not displayed (closed) and only displayed (open) during flood evacuations.

  • Installation, maintenance and operations supported by all key stakeholders including NSW State Emergency Services, Transport for NSW and relevant Local Governments.
